A National Scam

July 22, 2019

NOTICE: Across the country, scammers have a new technology called “Caller ID Spoofing” where they use random numbers from public and private agencies (like ours) and ask people for money for their relatives (a common one is a grandson whose “car broke down” and needs money right away). Several people got a call like this in Illinois and they were coming from what looks like The Iris Network on their caller ID.

So be aware that these unscrupulous people are using our good name in a telephone scam. As advocates for the blind and visually impaired, we wanted to spread the word that if anyone gets a call like this – DO NOT respond or give them any money or any financial information. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) has guidelines on what to do if you get such a call at the following link: https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/spoofing-and-caller-id.
