List of this Summer’s Great Maine Reads

June 5, 2018

Did you have an opportunity to listen to Maine Calling’s broadcast about Summer Reading on June 1, 2018? By all means listen! It was a great show with several Maine authors and great selections to add to your reading list.

NLS Talking Book player and cartridge mailer

It got me wondering about the many folks I might see as a Vision Rehabilitation Therapist for The Iris Network, who have not yet discovered the National Library Service Talking Books program provided through the Maine State Library (toll free 800-762-7106). In brief, if you have difficulty reading books in print from a vision loss, dyslexia, or any physical limitation, you may be eligible for this free service! A digital Talking Book player will be sent to you on loan through the mail, and you will receive digital audio cartridges of books and magazines that interest you. Did I mention, there is no cost, even the postage is paid for! The player is easy to use and if you find you need some training on it, there’s even a bit of assistance for that if you have a vision loss. Call Maine’s Division for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DBVI) at 877-594-5627 and let them know you need some training with a Talking Book player.

After listening to the program I wondered, how many of these suggested summer reading titles were actually available through the Talking Book program? Chris Boynton, Director of Outreach Services for Maine State Library Talking Books sent the following list of titles mentioned in the Maine Calling broadcast, and which are available now, which are currently in the works, and those not yet available. No excuses! Here are some of the best books by Maine writers, and Talking Books will deliver them right to your mailbox!
