Dorm Staff

Position:  Dorm Staff needed for our dormitory that houses vision rehabilitation and vocational training students, in Portland, part-time, no benefits.

Start date:  Immediate

Shift available:            Tuesdays from 5pm to 8am                             

Agency:  The Iris Network - www.theiris.org - a community-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with a mission of helping people who are visually impaired or blind attain independence and community integration seeks Dorm Staff primarily responsible for ensuring safety of students participating in an intensive vision rehabilitation and vocational training program at The Iris Network during week days 48 weeks per year.  Dorm Staff may sleep while on-call between mid-night and 6:00 AM while maintaining availability to respond promptly to resident needs at all times.  Students are working-age adults and live in our Dormitory during over-nights, weekends and holidays.  There are up to 12 working-age adult clients in the dorm.  Breakfast and dinner are provided to Dorm staff along with over-night sleeping accommodations.

Qualifications:  The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.  Candidates must be able to exercise sound independent judgment, be responsible, reliable, kind, patient, trustworthy, flexible, and mature.  They must have good people skills, empathy, and a good sense of humor, be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, must be able to independently complete assigned work in a timely manner with attention to accuracy and detail and must be able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.  Experience working with people with disabilities in a residential setting, or individuals who are visually impaired or blind is preferred.

Duties:  Some of the responsibilities of the Dorm Staff are:  report for work at 5 pm on weekdays at the Training Center to assist with evening meal and clean-up; follow instructions as indicated in shift report; prompt students to independently manage administration of own medications; oversee transition of students from Training Center to Dormitory after dinner; support student participation in scheduled recreation activities during evenings, weekends and holidays; maintain orderly and safe environment as well as general tidiness in Dormitory; Assist students, as needed, to ensure safety and comfort while maintaining a supportive social environment with firm professional and clear social boundaries; serve breakfast during overnight shifts; and heat and serve meals during daytime shifts.
