Part-time Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator

POSITION:   Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator; part-time, 20 hours per week; flexible schedule; some evenings, weekends, and travel required; short-term and long-term disability benefits provided, based in Portland, Maine.

The Iris Network, a community-based nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with a mission of helping people who are visually impaired or blind to attain independence and community integration, seeks a part-time Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator to develop and provide recreational and leisure time programming for residents served by The Iris Network’s Programs in Portland, Maine, and to coordinate other volunteer opportunities throughout The Iris Network (www.theiris.org). 

Duties:  The Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator develops and provides recreation and leisure time program for residents served by The Iris Network’s Programs to  promote increased Community integration, self-esteem and self-expression; encouraging social interaction; developing increased cultural awareness and enjoyment; promoting knowledge of, and participation in, one's community; fostering a sense of psychological and physical well-being through exercise and physical expression; developing and coordinating a structured volunteer program to support in the Recreation activities, as well as supporting other Iris Network programs in need of volunteers. 

Experience and Qualifications:  The Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator must have a Bachelors’ degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Social Work, or a related field and experience in organizing and coordinating recreational programming for adults and coordination and management of volunteers.  Experience working with adults with multiple disabilities including blindness is preferred.  This person must be an energetic, flexible, caring, and creative individual, with initiative, sound judgment, the ability to relate to residents both individually and in groups, and the ability to work with other staff members and volunteers as part of a collaborative team; excellent communication, organizational, interpersonal, interviewing and supervisory skills are also essential.
