Dear Friends,

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and I wish you the very best for the New Year.

In the coming months, the Iris Network will develop its capacity to advance independence and quality-of-life for people in Maine who are visually impaired or blind. We will reach out to people across our state with a renewed public education campaign, consider approaches to further developing our programs, and explore new strategies to reach people in more diverse locations.

These efforts will reflect our longstanding commitment to working with people across Maine who are visually impaired or blind so they may achieve their determined level of independence and integration into the community. As the incidence of vision impairment rises throughout the U.S., the Iris Network must grow stronger, more flexible, and wider. One of our key strategies will be to increase the role and impact of our field staff. We want to make sure that our services are available as close as possible to where our clients live.

Technology will be a partner in our growth. We will explore Global Positioning Systems, Internet-based strategies, and new approaches to using computers to evaluate their potential for our clients.

A strategic planning process will guide our efforts as we engage with new possibilities for collaborating with the thousands of people across Maine who are visually impaired and blind. Your support is even more essential to our future than it has been in the past. Thank you for your partnership.

Sincerely,

Adam Zayan, MD, MPH
President/CEO

Jim Phipps is new Chair of the Iris Network’s Board of Directors. An attorney specializing in non-profit and health care law who is a partner at the Portland based firm of Preti, Flaherty, Beliveau & Pachios, LLP, Jim began his service on the Board in1990 and has been a longtime member of the Program Services Committee. During his years of service, the Iris Network evolved from providing employment to developing and delivering a diverse range of opportunities for training, education, and support for people living with serious vision loss.

“I have seen a great deal of positive change at the Iris Network,” Jim says. “I am more and more impressed with the talented and very professional people on staff who deliver high quality services across Maine.” As Chair, Jim contributes to all aspects of the agency’s work, from program development to fundraising. The Iris Network community appreciates his leadership and the time he devotes to the agency away from his wife and two daughters and their home on Chebeague Island.

The Vice Chairs of the Board of Directors are Keith Potts and Nancy Hawes. Keith, a marketing director at IDEXX Laboratories in Westbrook, is Chair of two committees,
including the Development and Public Relations Committee, which oversees outreach and fundraising. Nancy, a senior tax manager at Baker, Newman & Noyes, is Chair of three
committees, including the Finance Committee, which oversees the budget and finance. Other key Board leaders include Pat Hart, chair of the Personnel, Program Services and Consumer Advisory Committees, Ed Heisler, Secretary and Chair of the Facilities committee, and Althea McGirr, Chair of the Planning Committee. The agency’s sincere thanks to them all!

The Iris Network welcomes new Board members:

William Dunn of Yarmouth brings to the Board 34 years of experience with diverse electric utility companies all over the world, as well as leadership experience with the Yarmouth Rotary Club and Rotaplast International, which organizes international surgical missions.

Matthew McKenzie of Gorham, nominated to the Board by friend and Iris Network board member Chuck Miller, has been managing director of marketing and public affairs at AAA Northern New England since 1994.

Dr. David Stuchiner of Auburn is a physician who
currently serves as a consultant to the Division of
Licensing and Certification, State of Maine, and
Emergency Medicine Consulting Services. David is a member of the American College of Emergency
Physicians and the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine
