Dear Friends of the Iris Network:

Welcome to the April 2007 issue of Insights
These pages provide examples of the tremendous leadership of people across Maine who are visually impaired or blind. From writing books in Bangor, to creating a public garden in Boothbay Harbor, to educating children in Orono, individuals who have mastered the challenges of vision loss are taking    on the world—and changing it for the better.

The Iris Network exists to make more success stories possible by creating individualized programs of training, education, and support and developing  resources for people with vision loss. This summer, with our strategic planning process complete, we will embark on a new phase of our work in which we will strengthen our services and further improve the quality of what we do.  We will also serve more  people throughout the state.

We will invite more people to participate in our monthly Aging with Grace and Retinitis Pigmentosa support groups, and start a new group for families of people with vision loss.  We will also develop arts workshops to promote self-expression and leadership among our clients.

We are already working to expand the services provided by our Low Vision Clinic. Ongoing education is essential to our goal of supporting more individuals, families, and communities.  We are reaching more people with information on mastering vision loss through our 2007 Public  Education Campaign.

Please call me at 207-774-6273 if you are interested in learning more about our activities. With your    interest and support, Iris Network clients will certainly continue to achieve personal fulfillment  and to provide leadership to us all.

Sincerely,

Adam Zayan, MD, MPH
